The AgriFutures Ginger Program aims to support a sustainable, growing and prosperous industry. The Program’s Research, Development & Extension (RD&E) Plan (2022-2027) identifies four key priorities areas focused on ensuring a continued premium for Australian ginger:
- High quality and sustainable production systems
- Market opportunities
- Technology and innovation
- Industry engagement
To support Priorities 1-3 of the RD&E Plan, this Request for Quotation (RFQ) is seeking services to conduct review(s) of domestic and international research of ginger (Zingiber officinale) on a variety of topics:
- Existing research of pest and disease management,
- Eating qualities and medicinal benefits and
- Economic studies on the cultivation and selling of ginger.
The AgriFutures Ginger Program Request for Quotation closes at 12pm AEST Wednesday, 25 September 2024.
Background
The AgriFutures Ginger Program is committed to supporting a sustainable, growing and prosperous ginger industry supplying product of the highest quality, that is strongly sought after by discerning consumers in Australia and around the world.
As ginger production is a well-established industry in the southern hemisphere, our industry seeks to leverage and capitalise on the industry’s mature state (in terms of production systems, research, and development) to identify potential research opportunities within Australia.
The goal of this project is to support the AgriFutures Ginger Program by identifying key international findings that can be easily adopted by the Australian ginger industry. Additionally, it aims to provide recommendations on research that can enhance the sustainability and profitability of the industry, covering the entire value chain and differentiate Australian ginger in both domestic and international markets.
The main objective of this project is to deliver review(s) of recent research conducted on edible ginger domestically and internationally. In addressing the RD&E plan (2022-2027), industry seeks to understand the below questions:
- The common international research trends (to understand the challenges to ginger production internationally) versus domestic research trends. Existing and emergent ginger and relevant tuber (e.g. turmeric, galangal) pest and diseases, their economic impact, impact trends, management and other relevant research
- Any existing chemical profiling of edible ginger (to verify medicinal or culinary properties of ginger) and their findings and recommendations.
- Any existing research in ginger varietals (e.g. through hybrid breeding) to influence taste, pest and disease resistance or productivity and their findings and recommendations.
The final deliverable should identify any key international findings industry can readily adopt and support AgriFutures in identifying where there could be efficiencies in leveraging previous research to further or validate in Australia.
Project plan(s) must include SMART milestones that outline the steps to identify, gather and review the relevant papers as well as identify the criteria for the paper to be included in the review (i.e. peer reviewed, published in credible journals etc.). The plan should include opportunities for AgriFutures/the Ginger Advisory Panel to provide input on the themes.
Individuals or organisations making a submission are required to have a working understanding of horticultural research and exemplary communications skills to produce a comprehensive review of current research on edible ginger. Respondents are welcome to present a quote for one, two or all the topics outlined above.
These review(s) should make recommendations where the Program can direct future research, in consideration of the RD&E Plan.
