AgriFutures Rice Program RD&E Plan 2027-32

The Australian rice industry is one of the world’s most productive and innovative farming sectors. However, growers face growing challenges. Water is becoming less reliable, climate conditions are changing, and production costs continue to rise.

Markets and community expectations are evolving. As a result, the industry must improve profits while using water more efficiently.

The AgriFutures Rice Program RD&E Plan 2027-2032 sets a clear direction for the future. It aims to build a profitable, resilient and sustainable rice industry. Importantly, the Plan views rice as part of a whole-farm business system. Research investment will help growers increase returns per megalitre, improve farm flexibility and manage risk.

The Plan focuses on four priority areas:

1. It supports productive and efficient rice systems.
2. It aims to improve varieties through faster genetic gain and stronger crop performance.
3. It strengthens resilience, sustainability and the industry’s licence to operate.
4. It improves adoption, capability and coordination across the sector.

More than 50 growers, advisers, researchers and industry representatives helped shape the Plan. Their feedback showed that water limits, climate pressure and market uncertainty are long-term challenges.

By 2032, the Plan aims to improve water productivity, increase the use of new tools and practices, strengthen variety performance, and build a more resilient Australian rice industry.
