Applications open for the 2026 Les Young Scholarship – an international opportunity for emerging Thoroughbred professionals

Applications are now open for the 2026 Les Young Scholarship, offering an emerging professional from the Australian Thoroughbred industry the opportunity to further develop their skills and knowledge through an international education experience at The National Stud in the United Kingdom.  The prestigious scholarship honours the legacy of Les Young, a highly respected figure in the Thoroughbred and racing industries who was renowned for his commitment to mentoring and supporting the next generation of industry professionals.

An international learning opportunity  
The Les Young Scholarship provides funding and support for the successful recipient to undertake a tailored program combining theory and practical coursework at The National Stud, one of the world’s leading Thoroughbred breeding and education institutions.

The program focuses on key areas including foaling and breeding, bloodstock husbandry, and stable and equine management, and can be adapted to suit the recipient’s experience, career goals and preferred duration. All travel and accommodation costs are covered by the scholarship.

Supporting the future of the Thoroughbred industry  
The scholarship is delivered through the AgriFutures Thoroughbred Horses Program, which invests in high impact research, development and extension (RD&E) to improve the sustainability, productivity and competitiveness of the Australian Thoroughbred industry.

Les Young was a foundation member of the Equine Advisory Committee under the former Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation and played a key role in shaping investment in equine research. His passion for the industry and generosity in mentoring young people continues through this scholarship established in his honour.

Who can apply?  
Applications are open to individuals who:

  • are Australian citizens or permanent residents
  • are aged between 18 and 30 years (note the increased age eligibility this year)
  • have a minimum of two years’ experience in the Thoroughbred breeding, bloodstock, spelling or racing sectors
  • have been with their current employer for at least 12 months
  • are keen to remain part of the Thoroughbred breeding industry
  • are able to travel to the UK and commence the course in September 2026 or January 2027.

Applicants must submit a written application addressing their industry experience, long term career goals, and perspectives on key challenges and opportunities facing the Thoroughbred industry, along with a resume and two letters of support.

Applications open: Thursday 26 March 2026
Applications close: 5pm (AEST), Friday 1 May 2026
Selection process concludes: Wednesday 20 May 2026
Successful applicant notified: Monday 25 May 2026
