Jarrah Ransome

I grew up in the very supportive community of Gundagai, NSW, and am currently studying a Bachelor of Animal Science at the University of New England. Since I didn’t grow up on a large-scale property, this community alone pushed me to learn the bounds of animal science in agriculture, leading to a chain reaction of being inspired by industry and its network of people.

I’m driven to expand people’s knowledge of opportunities in agriculture, particularly advocating that agriculture is more than farming – it’s a fibrous network of people, choices and innovation, shaping global products. My ideal job is one where I can get my hands dirty, while also analysing statistics and making informed choices to establish a high value product. I want to make an impact in this world and be at the forefront of a change in the industry. I believe that with the help of the Horizon Scholarship; I can take the first step towards that goal.

I am still in denial that I have been fortunate enough to receive this scholarship. I remember being inspired by people who have already made this achievement when I was younger. I am most looking forward to furthering my passion for agriculture by networking and gaining knowledge from fellow peers and industry. In addition, I’m looking forward contributing something towards the Scholarship itself, whether that’s encouraging someone to apply for 2024 or expressing how easy it is to take the first step.

I look forward to immersing myself in an industry that does not fit the expected graduate pathway – I can see the global importance of the future of the Chicken Meat Industry, especially after learning more about recent research and development within this sector. Better yet, I look forward to contributing a young, enthusiastic but unaware mindset to the opportunities that will arise from working with the AgriFutures Chicken Meat Program.
