The business case for accessing superior hazelnut genetics
Domestic consumption of in-shell hazelnuts is about 300 tonnes a year, and hazelnut kernels around 2,000 tonnes (equivalent to 4,500 tonnes in-shell). Australia imports 2,500–3,000...

DownloadThese appendices accompany the report Improving the Impact from Current and Future Genetic and Genomic Investments and provide detailed background information and analyses that underpin its findings and recommendations. Together, they extend the evidence base across two key domains critical to the growth of Australia’s emerging agricultural industries: industry-level assessments and the regulatory and legal landscape governing access to genetic resources.
The Industry Analysis Appendices summarise the current status and future prospects of 22 Australian emerging industries. Each industry paper presents an overview of production systems and markets, demand for superior genetic material, available sources of genetic diversity and key regulatory, technical and commercial opportunities. Collectively, they highlight the diversity of biological systems, maturity levels and innovation needs across Australia’s developing agricultural sectors.
Complementing this are the Regulatory and Legal Appendices, which examine Access and Benefit Sharing frameworks, intellectual property mechanisms such as Plant Breeder’s Rights and patent protection, and relevant biosecurity and biosafety regulations. These analyses — spanning 15 countries — offer valuable comparative insights into international approaches to managing genetic resources and protecting innovation.
Together, these appendices provide a practical foundation for researchers, policymakers and industry stakeholders seeking to enhance access to superior genetic material while maintaining compliance with complex regulatory frameworks. They also demonstrate the breadth of collaboration and expertise underpinning AgriFutures Australia’s Emerging Industries Program and its goal of supporting the growth, competitiveness and sustainability of Australia’s emerging agricultural sectors.
