The Australian chicken meat industry is deeply committed to fostering a workforce that places a premium on safety, health and capability. With more than 58,000 employees (both direct and indirect full-time equivalents), many of whom reside in rural and regional communities, the industry plays a vital role in the Australian agricultural landscape, contributing $7.9 billion to the economy through direct and indirect contributions.

This workforce strategy addresses an activity under priority 5 of the AgriFutures Chicken Meat Program RD&E Plan 2022-2027, which is ‘Building people capability and a diverse and sustainable workforce’. The RD&E Plan was developed with industry stakeholders, including the peak industry body, the Australian Chicken Meat Federation (ACMF), and outlines the industry priorities and objectives for research, development and extension for 2022-2027. For the greatest impact, this strategy is to be implemented through close collaboration between workers, employers and the broader community.

This document has a clear purpose: to provide an evidence-based and stakeholder-informed industry-wide workforce strategy for the chicken meat industry. Its mission is to cultivate the capability of the current and future industry workforce, and foster a diverse and sustainable workforce, all contributing to the long-term prosperity of the industry.

Specifically, the strategy aims to address critical issues, such as attraction, retention and training within the industry, positioning it as a secure, safe and sustainable employment option in Australia. This strategy supports the entire supply chain, encompassing the welfare and development of this workforce. This workforce strategy targets all five objectives outlined in the Australian Government White Paper on Jobs and Opportunities.
