This report details investigations comparing the effects of stubble burning or stubble retention on some soil properties, with particular attention to the soil microbial biomass and how its size, activity and composition is linked to the soil organic matter status. We also focus on the precise chemical components needed to build stable organic matter and discuss the possible implications if nutrients are not available in the correct proportions. Although this project focussed on rice rotations we believe the findings are relevant to a much wider section of Australian agriculture.
