One of the biggest challenges confronting farmers is being able to reconcile economic imperatives
with the need for environmental sustainability. At stake is the long term prosperity and viability of
the Australian agricultural sector. This Report examines progress, both within Australia and
internationally, of an exciting new policy development that aims to do just that: environmental
partnerships.
Environmental partnerships aim to harness the relationship between commercial markets and
institutions (including governments, retailers and environmental organisations) to deliver improved
environmental outcomes on the ground. In order to better understand the potential attractions and
shortcomings of such an approach, this Report employs a number of agricultural case studies.
