The industrial hemp industry has emerged as a promising sector in Australia, driven by the legalisation of hemp seed for human consumption in 2017 and the growing demand for sustainable, multipurpose crops. With applications ranging from building materials to cosmetics and food, industrial hemp presents a unique opportunity for Australian agriculture. However, its success hinges on reliable, high-yielding and well-adapted varieties alongside effective management practices. Addressing these needs is essential to realising the potential of this burgeoning industry.

The Hamilton Industrial Hemp Variety Trials (IHVT) were conducted over three years (2021–2024) as part of a nationally coordinated effort to evaluate the performance of industrial hemp varieties under varying conditions. This project aimed to provide Australian growers with independent, science-backed data to inform decision-making around variety selection, sowing times and crop management. The trials demonstrated the viability of several hemp varieties for grain and dual-purpose use, with yields comparable to or exceeding other crops under irrigation. Notably, 13 varieties consistently achieved grain yields above 1.5 t/ha, with 10 exceeding 2 t/ha in at least one sowing. Varietal differences in dry matter yield, oil content and grain size highlighted the adaptability and potential of industrial hemp as a reliable crop in Victoria.
