AgriFutures Australia has identified significant growth potential in the industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) industry in Australia due to its extensive range of sustainable applications. Approval for hemp grain as human food by FSANZ in 2017 has further supported this growth and opened up market opportunities. Growers face challenges in selecting hemp varieties due to limited knowledge of their performance under Australian conditions and the optimal sowing times in each region. To address this, AgriFutures conducted a three-year Industrial Hemp Variety Trials program across nine locations in Australia, including sites in the Northern Territory, South Australia (two), Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia (two), New South Wales and Queensland to identify the most appropriate grain and dual-purpose varieties and sowing times in each region. Results from trial sites at Maaoupe and Reedy Creek in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia indicate that grain-only production varieties are well-suited for this region. While several of the dual-purpose varieties are feasible (Bialobrzeskie, Henola and Ferimon 12), it is recommended that longer-season varieties trialled (Chinese varieties and Ruby) are not planted in this region as they did not produce high dry matter or grain yields. Moderate season length varieties such as Bialobrzeskie, Henola and Ferimon 12 were the best performers for dual-purpose production.
