The industrial hemp industry in Australia is poised for significant growth due to its versatile applications including grain, fibre and oil production. Recent legislative changes such as the approval of hemp seed for human consumption in 2017 have spurred interest in this emerging sector. Despite its potential, the industry faces challenges such as limited agronomic data, regionally suitable varieties and best practice guidelines for production. Addressing these gaps is essential to unlocking the full potential of industrial hemp in Australia.

This report presents the findings from the 2022–23 and 2023–24 Industrial Hemp Variety Trials (IHVT) conducted at the Stanthorpe site in Queensland as part of a national research initiative funded by AgriFutures Australia. The trials aim to evaluate the performance of multiple hemp varieties under different sowing times and fully organic management conditions, focusing on grain yield, biomass production, water use efficiency and grain quality.
