The Australian lucerne seed industry is worth an estimated $95 million to the economy and is an important contributor to Australian agriculture, with lucerne a key fodder crop for dairy and beef cattle, and sheep.

Lucerne seed growers in Australia grow seed under seed multiplication contracts for both domestic and export markets, and high seed yields for the contracted life of the lucerne stand are integral for business profitability. With a mix of Australian-bred and imported varieties grown, current, objective and standardised data is valuable for growers when selecting the right variety to proceed with under contract, as the productive life of each perennial stand is five to seven years.

This trial, conducted over five years to align with the productive life of commercial lucerne varieties, gathered standardised information on the growth parameters of lucerne varieties under various watering conditions. The performance of each trialled stand is detailed in the report. Growers should consider the performance of the stands against the measured watering regime to make a balanced judgement on which variety to proceed with.
