The Australian thoroughbred breeding industry is the second-largest in the world and makes a substantial economic and social contribution to the country. Research capturing the 2016-2017 breeding season estimated that the industry injected $1.16 billion into the Australian economy, and sustained almost 8,000 full-time equivalent jobs.

However, to support future planning and industry advocacy to government, stakeholders identified a need for these values to be updated. This latest study, undertaken by consultancy IER, determined that in 2022-2023, the industry contributed $1.68 billion to the economy and generated 9,268 full-time equivalent jobs. There were 510 active stallions, and 12,585 foals were registered from 19,454 broodmares covered.

This data can be used by Thoroughbred Breeders Australia and state-based breeding associations to highlight the size and scope of the industry when advocating for funding and support from all levels of government, corporate and community partners, and the broader equine sector.
