DownloadDomestic consumption of in-shell hazelnuts is about 300 tonnes a year, and hazelnut kernels around 2,000 tonnes (equivalent to 4,500 tonnes in-shell). Australia imports 2,500–3,000 tonnes of hazelnut product annually, mainly as kernel and primarily from Turkey. The 2022 AgriFutures report Hazelnuts in Australia. Productivity and economic analysis for industry expansion identified a range of genetic improvements which would help improve Australia’s hazelnut industry (Simpson et al. 2022). The report produced by horticulture researchers and agronomists across Australia engaged with industry stakeholders to identify which improvements the sector should focus on.
