Domestic demand for jackfruit is on the rise, largely due to consumer demand for plant-based meat products, with the industry poised to capture the burgeoning market for both fresh and processed jackfruit. In 2011–12, jackfruit production in Australia was around 742 tonnes with an estimated gross value of about $2.6 million (AgriFutures).

The emerging jackfruit industry has determined that superior genetics can provide numerous, increased yields and resistance to pests and diseases. Studies have shown that genetic diversity is a key factor in the resilience and adaptability of crops to changing environmental conditions and consumer preferences (Salgotra 2023).
