Summary

The agriculture, forestry and fisheries sector has an important role in Australia’s national decarbonisation transformation, driven by the demands of government and industry net zero targets, market, customer and consumer expectations, and by the impacts of climate change on natural capital. Tackling the sector’s energy use footprint, particularly diesel consumption, offers an attainable and immediate pathway to emissions reductions, which can then support more complex emissions reduction efforts required from production, harvesting and processing.

With a relatively small number of individual producers and processors introducing renewable energy technologies and alternative fuel sources into production systems to date, adoption efforts must be accelerated. The project will engage in an open call to Australia’s agricultural communities and business ecosystems, inviting participation at all levels in the sector’s energy transition. It will produce detailed insights on the energy transition pathways relevant to target communities.

The project will build on analysis, insights and stakeholder engagement undertaken over the past two years to build certainty, confidence and coordinated collaboration amongst stakeholders to support a structured, planned transition.
