Summary

The costs of achieving absolute emission reduction targets set by the public and private sector and which the chicken meat industry is expected to adhere to are, as yet, unknown. Previously, analysis was conducted to model pathways to carbon neutrality for model integrator companies as part of a pro-active adoption scenario (Copley et al. 2021 Chicken Meat Industry Carbon Neutral Pathways). Since then, however, the landscape has shifted, and industry can now expect to be subject to a sectoral emission reduction target (Scope 1 & 2 emissions) to be set by the Federal Government. Further, supply chains and corporate reporting require Scope 3 reporting and reduction.

This project will develop the emission reduction pathways required for the industry to inform the agriculture sector target to be developed imminently by the Federal Government. The pathways will quantify the level of abatement possible and build up to and compare different levels of ambition, including the Federal Government economy-wide targets and the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) Forest, Land and Agriculture Guidance (Scope 1, 2 and 3 incl. Land use and
