Summary
To improve water productivity in Australian rice production and ensure the long-term profitability and competitiveness of the industry, it is crucial to explore the full potential of water-saving irrigations without compromising yield. This research aims to investigate the interaction between irrigation regimes, nitrogen supply, and rice genotypes to develop targeted strategies for optimizing water and nitrogen usage in rice farming systems. The study will utilise a combination of field and glasshouse experiments to address key questions regarding genotypic variations in nitrogen acquisition, flag leaf photosynthesis, stay-green characteristics, and yield formation. The outcomes of this study will provide scientific evidence to support the adoption of efficient nitrogen-water management strategies for rice cultivation in Australia.
