Industrial Hemp Variety Trials (IHVT)
About the program
Industrial Hemp Variety Trials (IHVT) is a nationally coordinated 3-year program (2021–2024) led by AgriFutures Australia to evaluate industrial hemp varieties across nine trial sites in all Australia. The IHVT was launched to fill a major knowledge gap in Australia’s emerging hemp industry providing independent data on which hemp varieties perform best in each region and the optimal sowing times for those areas.
By standardising trial design and protocols across Northern (tropical), Central (subtropical/Mediterranean) and Southern (temperate) climatic zones, the IHVT generated robust, region-specific insights to guide growers’ decisions.
The project delivered evidence-based varietal recommendations and agronomic guidelines for Australian hemp producers, addressing critical industry needs and supporting broader development goals.
