The new AgriFutures Australia Rice Advisory Panel will meet for the first time on Friday, 16 March 2018 in Wagga Wagga to discuss rice research investments, the new Australian Rice Leadership Program and developments of the rice research and development levy.

The new Advisory Panel will be Chaired by rice grower Mr Drew Braithwaite. Panel members include Dr Laurie Lewin, Mrs Michele Groat, Dr Vito Butardo Jr., Mr Garry Knagge, Dr Ben Ovenden, Mr Russell Ford, Mr Barry Kirkup and Mr Brian Dunn.

On behalf of the Advisory Panel, AgriFutures Australia and the Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA) would like to recognise the commitment of outgoing Chair, Mr Ian Mason and panel members Mr John Sheppard, Mr Peter Kaylock and Mr Peter Herrmann.

“Mr Ian Mason has been an important part of the Rice Advisory Panel for more than 20 years and provided strong leadership as Chair since 2007. His commitment to the industry is unwavering. His leadership, knowledge of the industry and passion for rice has led the Panel through years of decision-making around worthwhile, progressive and innovative RD&E,” said Jeremy Morton, RGA President.

Mr Michel Beer, AgriFutures Australia General Manager, Research and Innovation added Mr Mason’s contribution and legacy to the rice industry will be evident for many years to come.

“The Rice Advisory Panel is entering a new and exciting chapter. I am particularly proud that we have our first female representative. Michele Groat is highly experienced and will bring a new skill set and diversity of thought to the panel.

“The combination of expertise and skills on the new Panel is unique and we look forward to working as a collective to ensure the future of the rice industry is bright and prosperous,” said Mr Beer.

The Rice Advisory Panel plays an important role connecting rice growers and the research sector. It does this by providing advice and recommendations relating to the allocation of grower levy’s and government contributions for research and development in the industry.

The Rice Advisory Panel is a three-year term and supports the delivery of the Rice RD&E Program and Five Year Strategic Plan which is focused on rice breeding, aerobic rice development, farm productivity and extension.
