This plan is the first for the Farming and Fishing Health and Safety Program, and builds on the work undertaken for the Farm Health and Safety Program. It was developed following consultation with members of the Joint Research Venture for Farm Health and Safety.

The Collaborative Partnership for Farming and Fishing Health and Safety Program is managed by RIRDC on behalf of the Department of Health and Ageing, the Cotton Research and Development Corporation, the Grains Research and Development Corporation, the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and RIRDC.

This plan sets out three objectives and accompanying strategies for R&D under the program. Each strategy has a set of performance indicators. The strategies define how each objective should be tackled, and the indicators provide the basis on which the program will be assessed.

The plan is consistent with the RIRDC Corporate Plan (2007–2012) and Australian Government National Research Priorities and Rural Research Priorities. The plan reflects stakeholders’ priorities for R&D to support profitable, competitive and resilient agricultural industries and innovation and change in rural industries.

This report, an addition to RIRDC’s diverse range of over 1800 research publications, forms part of the Collaborative Partnership for Farming and Fishing Health and Safety R&D program, which aims to improve the:
• physical health of farming and fishing workers and their families
• mental health of farming and fishing families
• safety environment and work practices in farming and fishing industries.
