This report considers the question of forestry in the 400-650 mm/yr rainfall zone, particularly in southern Australia, from the point of view of conifers, both native and exotic. A number of candidate species, their growth potential, products and characteristics are brought together for comparison. Some challenges for forestry in drier regions are discussed together with the need for research and additional decision-making tools.
