The nutritional management of deer is a vital strategy for the deer industry to maximise its
profitability. In southern Australia, the herbage availability for grazing deer fluctuates with the
season, resulting in a low availability of feed in autumn and winter, a surplus of green feed in spring,
and a dry feed period in summer/ autumn. The seasonal feed supply results in a significant variation
in growth rate of deer. Supplementary feeding in summer and early winter is required to achieve
economic production.
