This project surveyed producers, exporters and industry representatives in 2023 and 2025. The surveys examined current agronomic practices and identified priorities for future research, development and extension (RD&E).
In 2023, 60 stakeholders participated, while 48 responded in 2025. Producers represented most respondents in both surveys.
Across South Australia and Victoria, Yallara, Mulgara, Kingbale and Brusher remained the most widely grown oaten hay varieties. In addition, adoption of newer varieties such as Wallaby and Archer increased between surveys. Water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC), stem thickness, hay colour and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) were consistently ranked as the most important hay quality traits.
Understanding of hay quality improved in 2025. Fewer respondents were unsure about trait importance, and 89% correctly identified the higher-quality hay sample from a feed report.
The results also showed continued alignment with recommended cutting times to optimise hay yield and quality. In 2025, average hay yields were most commonly 7–8 t/ha in South Australia and 5–6 t/ha in Victoria. However, rain damage and long curing times remained the key barriers to higher yields and quality.
Industry RD&E priorities focused on new variety development, reducing curing time through mechanical methods, and managing variability in hay yield and quality. These findings will help guide future investments and ensure research remains aligned with industry needs.
