This research sets clear benchmarks for normal equine fetal membranes in healthy thoroughbred pregnancies. Pregnancy loss remains a major issue for the Australian equine breeding industry. However, many cases are difficult to explain because veterinarians lack reliable reference data.

To fill this gap, researchers studied fetal membranes from 100 healthy foalings in the Upper Hunter region of New South Wales. They recorded membrane appearance, cell counts and key immune features.

The study showed that some healthy mares and foals fell outside traditional foaling time guidelines. It also found that normal pregnancies can include a range of colour, texture and shape differences. Many healthy cases contained Placental Areas of Degeneration.

Researchers also measured normal levels of inflammatory cells in different membrane regions. These results provide practical reference points for veterinarians and pathologists. As a result, they can more easily identify signs of disease and inflammation.

The study improved knowledge of the immune environment between mare and foal. Healthy samples consistently contained T-lymphocytes and did not contain B-lymphocytes. The findings help distinguish normal variation from disease. They also support future research into pregnancy loss, foal health and equine reproduction.
