With global demand for hazelnuts also increasing, the Australian agriculture industry is poised to capitalise on the opportunity to displace imported product.
The Australian Hazelnut Program of Research (AHAZ) constitutes a $2million investment allocated across three themes over five years (2024-2029).
The major objective of this program of research is to grow the emerging hazelnut industry in a sustainable manner so that current growers are incentivised to expand production area and benefit from greater yields, product quality and profitability.
Theme 1 will focus on addressing key knowledge gaps in production by linking practical advice to enhance management for both on and off-farm processes, to improve overall production outcomes.
Theme 2 will establish a benchmarking framework that provides a robust statistical foundation for the industry, defines quality standards for produce, and develops a sustainability framework to strengthen industry promotion.
Theme 3 will deliver new knowledge to growers, including the dissemination of information on innovative technologies and highlighting opportunities arising from the advancements in the production and benchmarking themes.
The Australian Hazlenut Program of Research was developed in collaboration with a team from the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), the University of Melbourne, the University of New England, Charles Sturt University, the University of New South Wales, Central Queensland University, Lincoln Agritech, ERM Australia, STR Consulting, Fourjay Farms and other industry representatives through Hazelnut Growers of Australia Inc (HGAI), work on the program has already begun.
