The AgriFutures Kangaroo Program Strategic RD&E Plan 2021-2026 outlines the key development priorities of the Australian kangaroo industry, and guides research, development and extension investments linked to those priorities.
The Plan details the state of the industry with regards to wild kangaroo numbers, quotas for the four species approved for commercial harvest, value of products sold domestically and overseas, and the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) faced by the industry. A breakdown of the Australian macropod levy, which contributes to National Residue Survey testing and R&D investments, is also included.
Following a review of earlier work, an extensive consultation process involving the Kangaroo Industry Association of Australia (KIAA), industry participants and other stakeholders was undertaken to develop this Plan. Roadblocks to industry growth and the RD&E activities that can address them within the next five years were identified. Feedback on an initial draft was incorporated into the final version.
The kangaroo industry’s priorities for 2021-2016 are: The kangaroo industry’s licence to operate is enhanced; and The consumer appeal of kangaroo products is enhanced.
