This AgriFutures Australia short report introduces and describes in more detail how hydrogen could work as an alternative energy source for rural producers and farmers. Hydrogen is being rapidly developed as an alternative energy source in Australia because it can potentially replace almost all fossil fuel use. Some see hydrogen gas as the ideal ‘clean’ fuel of the future, and essential to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. This report explains why and considers where and how it might be used by rural producers and farmers in the future.
This report is the sixth in a series on alternative energy opportunities for rural producers and farmers. The series has been developed to help those at the heart of Australian agriculture make informed decisions about alternative energy options. Some topics raised in this report will be relevant to other alternative energy technologies.
The first report provided an overview of alternative energy technologies and why rural industries may be looking to them to meet their future energy needs. Other technologies covered as part of the series include solar PV, battery storage, bioenergy and wind energy.
