Thermochemical processes for biomass conversion, such as gasification and pyrolysis, may be used for biofuels production. However, conventional gasification in fluidised bed reactors suffers from high energy consumption to achieve the >1000°C required to produce synthesis gas. Moreover, downstream conversion of char and tar is required to clean up the synthesis gas. This report presents research on a new technology called reactive flash volatilisation. Reactive flash volatilization combines pyrolysis, partial oxidation, steam reforming and water gas shift reactions in a single short residence time reactor. Biomass is converted to tar free synthesis gas in less than 50ms.
