Shark cartilage powders are valuable in both Asian and Western countries, based on the perception that they contain anti-cancer or anti-arthritic pain activities. These perceptions of pharmacological efficacy are only partially supported by clinical data, though there is good laboratory evidence for a range of biological activities (bioactivity). This evidence alone has been sufficient to drive the large-scale, worldwide harvest of sharks.
