Industry-supported honeybee research was administered by the Australian Honey Board until 1980. The Honey Research Act 1980 established the Honey Research Committee and introduced a statutory levy to fund research and development activities for the beekeeping industry. To bring about further improvements in the organisation and development of research, the Primary Industries and Energy Research and Development Act 1987 created the Honeybee Research and Development Council. Further streamlining of the administration of research and development resulted in the formation in 1995 of the Honeybee Research and Development Committee within the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation.
