This study demonstrates that:
• water-use efficiency varies among tree crop species,
• that it will be enhanced by increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration. This will have profound effects on Australian agriculture, where water is so often limiting, and
• that there are prospects for analysing the underlying genetic control of water-use efficiency.
• Oxygen isotope composition of organic matter may be a valuable tool for assessing yield potential.
