Respiratory disease is an important cause of wastage in the horse racing industry. Viral respiratory disease is an important contributor to this wastage, with EHV 1 and 4 widely regarded as important pathogens. The clinical implications of two other equine herpesviruses, the gammaherpesviruses EHV2 and 5, are poorly understood. The future control of respiratory disease in horses will require an improved understanding of the clinic-virological aspects of equine herpes virus infections utilising technology that has not previously been available and including evaluation of the role of EHV2 and 5 infections. 2004, 21pp, Pub No W04/157: FREE Web-only publication
