Respiratory disease is an important cause of wastage in the horse racing industry. Viral respiratory disease is an important contributor to this wastage, with EHV 1 and 4 widely regarded as important pathogens. The clinical implications of two other equine herpesviruses, the gammaherpesviruses EHV2 and 5, are poorly understood.
