Australian agriculture faces numerous challenges, including fluctuating market demands, environmental regulations and the need for innovation to remain competitive. Within this context, there is a pressing need for industries to explore new avenues for growth.

This report, authored by the Colere Group, focused on addressing these challenges by comprehensively analysing potential revenue opportunities for the agriculture sector in a variety of market types, including value-add, export and niche. The authors evaluated more than 150 plant, animal, fungal and insect product areas, ranging from the largest and most established to those emerging now. They also present concepts and case studies that highlight the scope and diversity of opportunities across various agricultural industries.

The report identifies factors that help and hinder the development of alternative income streams for producers and industries, including industry size and scale, maturity, competitiveness, geography, and innovation. It emphasises the importance of industry maturity, competition, and the ability to substitute existing products before introducing revolutionary new products. Additionally, it underlines the importance of innovation and the role of premiums in driving profitability, guiding industries in developing strategies to maximise their potential.

To build on these findings, the report outlines a structured approach to assessing the viability of potential new revenue streams. The approach includes three main evaluations: a combination of factors relating to the producer, processing and the value chain; the impact of the potential innovation; and its readiness for uptake and implementation.
