The report outlines the potential value of Australian birds and reptiles on international
markets. While it was agreed at the meeting that the opportunity for exporting would
deter smuggling there was recognition of the commercial restrictions imposed by the
requirements of the Commonwealth Wildlife Protection Act 1982. This Act is
administered by Environment Australia and it is the legislation that regulates the
export of native wildlife and enables Australia to fulfil international obligations under
the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
