The Australian agriculture industry is characterised by a diverse range of products contributing significantly to domestic and international markets. However, the complexity of supply and value chains presents numerous challenges, including high transport costs, seasonal constraints, and significant vulnerability to market- and weather-related shocks.
In this context, effective collaboration within and across value chains is essential to increase income and manage the production risks faced by industries. Collaboration, however, has its own complexities. Before parties agree to work together, they must answer some key questions – why collaborate? who should I collaborate with? what should we collaborate on?
This report, by SGA Solutions, identifies a key problem – the limited awareness and knowledge of the way value chain stakeholders can effectively collaborate, particularly in new and emerging industries. The report aims to give stakeholders in AgriFutures Australia’s levied and emerging industries the knowledge and tools necessary to foster effective collaborations.
Key findings highlight the complexity of supply and value chains, driven by the diversity of products and the need to meet domestic and international market demands. Factors critical for successful collaboration were identified, including trust, transparency, effective communication, and alignment of goals and incentives. The report also underscores the importance of innovation, such as artificial intelligence and agtech, in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of collaborations.
To address these findings, the report includes a collaboration guide for stakeholders who are considering how they can unlock new opportunities for growth and sustainability. The guide and associated checklists cover five key elements of collaboration: (1) understanding the drivers; (2) understanding the value proposition and impact; (3) designing; (4) building; and (5) assessing and reviewing. Effective communication underpins every stage of collaboration and is the most critical factor.
