Connecting the unconnected for on-farm technology adoption

Grain Producers South Australia

  • Project code: PRO-016158

  • Project stage: Closed

  • Project start date: Monday, May 16, 2022

  • Project completion date: Tuesday, May 16, 2023

  • National Priority: AFI - AgriFood Innovation

Summary

This project has a two pronged approach as not only is it about encouraging greater adoption of technology but by utilising the Zetifi connectivity solutions, grain growers will be able to use more technology on-farm. This will be the first of its kind trial in South Australia and we believe the three grain growing properties involved will be able to champion innovative connectivity solutions. One of the major barriers identified by the SA AgTech Strategic Plan was return on investment and the only way to show whether technology will work in local conditions and is affordable for the farmer is by trialing it on-farm. Unless we bridge the connectivity gap by utilising innovative solutions, such as the Zetifi technology, our grower members will continue to struggle to adopt the latest technology and therefore fall behind in productivity and profitability.

Objective Summary

At the completion of the program, we expect to see positive results from the three grain growing properties about the ability to utilise current and new technology on-farm because they are able to have reliable connectivity. We see this as an affordable solution to addressing a huge barrier in the adoption of technology by grain growers. It should also be noted that much of the farmer’s business in modern society is undertaken through the use of technology, which could simply be through a phone app, but without reliable connectivity they are forced back to pen and paper. The results of the pilot will be published and promoted and we will then use these results to seek further assistance for innovative technology solutions. We also plan to appoint a professional videographer to put together a video of the results with the three grain growers to be on display at AdvanceAg andEvokeAg in Adelaide.
