Summary
Globally, the use of lead-based ammunition is being phased out. In Australia, this has significant consequences for macropod shooting which is guided by National Codes of Practice (CoP). This project aims to guide Australia’s transition to lead-free ammunition and to inform the CoP for the humane shooting of kangaroos and wallabies (commercial and non-commercial) in Australia.
The project will address four questions:
What is the commercial macropod industry currently using to comply with the Code of Practice (CoP)?
What lead-free ammunition is currently available in Australia, that potentially could meet the stated purpose of the CoP’s humane shooting of macropods?
Can lead-free ammunition provide a humane kill to macropods?
Can commercially available equipment provide a means to independently audit the animal welfare outcomes from the commercial macropod harvest?
