Summary

The Australian ginger industry has grown steadily in the past seven years, with some challenges identified in the AgriFutures Ginger Program RD&E Plan 2022-2027. The aim of this project is to carry out a comprehensive literature review and summarise the challenges to ginger production internationally to:

provide the local ginger industry with a better understanding of the existing research written in Japanese and Chinese in the “pest and disease management” for ginger
provide knowledge (based on the articles written in Japanese and Chinese) to improve ginger’s “eating qualities and medicinal benefits”.
provide knowledge on current research on ginger varietals (e.g. through hybrid breeding) to influence pest and disease resistance or productivity

In consultation with AgriFutures/the Ginger Advisory Panel, this project will provide recommendations for our domestic research in pest and disease resistance, and medicinal and culinary quality management, and productivity for existing and emergent ginger and relevant tuber. Overall, this project will provide advanced knowledge for the Australian ginger industry to improve its sustainability in production and develop high-quality, value added products.
