Objective Summary

If Australian agriculture is to compete and succeed internationally, Australian farmers need to lead the world in best practice. They need to recognise changing consumer preferences, adopt new technologies and production practices, and maintain the sustainability of their operations. In a “city-centric” world, Australia needs farmers with a global view who can articulate the needs of the agricultural industry – particularly in an age where fads and emotion often dictate policy.

Nuffield Australia, through the Nuffield Farming Scholarship Program, is committed to equipping farmers with the knowledge they need to meet this goal.

The Objectives of this project are as follows:
To build the capacity of the rice farming sector to overcome the challenges of a global and internationally competitive environment through the provision of support for a Nuffield Farming Scholarship for a rice farmer.
The scholarship comprises both organised and individual study components.
The study tours develop the bonds between the new scholars so that they can network and develop friendships that will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.
The development of the group dynamics and personal development are key outcomes from the scholarships.
Scholars gain a thorough understanding of the global influences acting on their industries and build capacity to deal with new opportunities and change within their industry and own business.
