Summary
The
presence of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in Indonesia has emphasised the need
for Australia to prepare for a potential incursion, with dramatic impacts on
livestock operations. An FMD incursion into Australia has profound
ramifications for livestock stakeholders who would be faced with the abrupt
implementation of FMD AUSVETPLAN responses, which may include a national
livestock standstill. The implementation of restriction zones and/or a national
livestock standstill could have significant impacts on the thoroughbred
industry in Australia, regardless of the lack of disease in equines. This
project assesses the potential impact of an FMD outbreak on Australia’s
thoroughbred breeding industry, provides a risk-based biosecurity framework for
FMD which can be adapted to other equine diseases, and provides recommendations
for future research and development.
