About the theme

Theme four of the Carbon Initiative Program aims to deliver novel approaches to identifying, developing and commercialising co-benefits from carbon farming for income diversification.

Projects explore the methodology to identify practical and viable innovative approaches to co-benefits and then translate the information into practical guidance for farmers, fishers and foresters.

Projects include:

  • Quantifying the greenhouse gas emission and carbon co-benefits of on-farm irrigation dams
  • Using compost to improve nitrogen use efficiency and productivity of almonds
  • Market opportunities for methane abatement and carbon storage through improved kangaroo grazing management.

Project summary: Measuring greenhouse gas emissions of on-farm irrigation dams

This study conducted the first baseline measurements of GHG emissions and carbon storage of irrigation farm dams in Australia. Data was collected through comprehensive sampling from 38 on-farm dams in the Murrumbidgee Valley of NSW.

Project summary: Using compost to improve nitrogen use efficiency and productivity of almonds

This project was to assess existing commercial and research trials of compost made with almond hulls and shell (currently a waste product) and quantify the nitrogen savings, improvements in soil fertility, and carbon storage benefits from using this compost.

Project summary: Methane abatement and carbon storage through kangaroo grazing

The project assessed the benefits of transforming parts of rangeland cattle areas to incorporate kangaroos into grazing systems, provided information and guidelines to allow producers to assess the opportunity, and researched what challenges will impact the implementation of the proposed method.
