The Fodder Industry in Australia has been an established part of the rural scene since agriculture commenced in this country. However, it has been traditionally seen as just part of the more recognised grazing and cropping industries rather than an industry in its own right.
In the early 90’s RIRDC became involved in helping the industry organise itself as a distinct and important component of the agricultural sector to direct attention to issues that were being given insufficient attention. This led to formation of a research and development program, and more recently an industry association.
This publication is the outcome of a need, identified by the research and development program, to define the industry both geographically and statistically, for more precise measurement of industry size and complexity, and to aid direction of industry effort.
