RIRDC has, in its long association with the rice industry of NSW, given support to rice improvement and grain quality. The project discussed in this report was funded at a time when Australia did not sell rice to Japan. By the conclusion of the project, however, we were marketing rice into that country and an understanding of their preferences was important to us gaining a substantial share of the available market. As a result of this project one rice variety, Millin, was released specifically for Japan and this enabled the industry to gain market share. 2004, 18pp, Pub No 04/006; $16
