The studies outlined in this report aim to improve the existing diagnostic technologies for these virus diseases by developing a comprehensive set of primers for use in polymerase chain reactions (PCR), which will be able to rapidly and sensitively detect the presence of these viruses in clinical samples. This report also describes work towards the development of a blood test and vaccine for equine rhinovirus type 1, a significant cause of respiratory and systemic illness of horses in Australia.
