The Using Behavioural Science to Enhance Extension and Adoption Outcomes in the Thoroughbred Horse Industry project is exploring how evidence‑based behavioural insights can improve the uptake of best‑practice animal welfare, disease control and breeding technologies across Australia’s Thoroughbred value chain.
This project addresses a critical gap between high‑quality research and real‑world practice by identifying the social, attitudinal and contextual factors that influence adoption. Through a structured behavioural analysis, the research examines key drivers and barriers to change, maps stakeholder needs and assesses workforce capability to support effective extension and adoption.
The project also delivers a targeted behavioural science training program designed to equip the current and future Thoroughbred horse workforce with practical tools to overcome resistance to change and support sustainable practice improvement. Insights from the research and training will be consolidated into a behavioural science toolkit, alongside a monitoring and evaluation framework to track behaviour change and long‑term impact.
By strengthening extension capability and improving adoption of industry‑agreed best practices, this research aims to support improved animal welfare outcomes, stronger biosecurity, enhanced breeding practices and a more resilient social licence for the Australian Thoroughbred horse industry.
