Seed tests are a preferred option for making declarations of freedom from bacterial wilt, required by many countries for Australia’s valuable export trade in lucerne seed. At present there are no international standards for testing of lucerne seed for bacterial wilt or Verticillium wilt – this exposes seed companies to potentially large losses if a shipment is rejected. Lucerne is the first seed crop to be evaluated by the International Seed Health Initiative (ISHI) Technical Committee, with the objectives of establishing standards for bacterial wilt and Verticillium wilt, and selecting assay(s) suitable for routine use. In 1999/2000 three selective media for bacterial wilt and the ELISA test developed by SARDI were evaluated. The group also examined variation between the bacteria strains internationally and compared methods for Verticillium wilt testing. 2002, 16pp, Pub No 02/149 $16
