Communication systems, particularly mobile phones, are becoming increasingly necessary to instigate opportunity and sustain development in rural Australia. According to independent research conducted by the Kondinin Group, 84% of the 709 farmer members surveyed used a mobile phone in their farming operation, and four out of five were using digital Code Divisional Multiple Access (CDMA) mobile handsets. This independent review of mainstream CDMA mobile telephony handsets aims to assist rural customers considering the purchase of the equipment, and discusses what can be expected from future mobile telephony developments. 2004, 38pp, Pub No 04/100; $16
