This project extends the methodologies and preliminary data generated during project DAN97A in an
effort to locate rice varieties with resistance to attack from the rice bloodworm, Chironomus tepperi.
Twenty-eight rice varieties were screened using controlled conditions and fixed pest densities. This
data was combined with the data for 16 other varieties obtained as part of DAN97A prior to analysis.
The highest levels of root system vigour were shown by Pokkali, Mas, Taichung Native 1 and TKM6,
whilst YRK3, HR19, Goolarah and Koshihikari have higher levels of resistance than the other
varieties screened to date.
