In 2011 a significant increase in the spillover of Hendra virus from bats into horses occurred. In response to this increase, the New South Wales, Queensland and federal government committed funds to research leading to strategies to minimise the impact of Hendra virus.
This report describes a project that was funded to identify viral co-infections and metabolic biomarkers associated with increases in Hendra virus prevalence in bats. These biomarkers have the potential to be used to identify periods of high risk associated with spillover events.
